One West Michigan has adopted a new sign law while a judge has declared another's unconstitutional.

"Total Censorship" were the words of District Court Judge Joseph Skocelas used to describe the city of Saugatuck's sign laws. The city had cited one man who put up a 29-foot-wide sign in his front lawn made of several smaller signs. It criticized the Saugatuck's zoning laws because he had been forced to remove a second-story awning that the city said violated the Historic nature of Saugatuck.

City officials may appeal the ruling. Meantime, the Holland city council has agreed to allow the new mural on the wall of Escape Ministries, an organization that helps at-risk kids.A neighbor had complained the colorful mural, which includes the word "Escape", was graffiti.

Holland's new sign laws will allow such murals, but only as long as city officials believe it to be "art".
