People new to Michigan's winters ofter marvel to see the big lake freeze over and are drawn to explore the pressure ridges on foot.  But it is dangerous to  walk out on Lake Michigan.

Police say it is not as stiff as it seems because underwater currents continue to make new cracks and crevasses in the ice.

WOOD TV talked to one photographer who nearly died Saturday.

Brian Lemieux said he was following the bootprints of other people, but suddenly there was nothing but open water under his feet.

He was able to pull himself out.

Although many people do seem to walk on the ice near the piers, police advise against it.
