Grand Rapids Public Schools trustees were told Monday afternoon there's a way to balance a budget that presents a $13.5 million deficit.

The board passed the FY 2015 budget Monday evening.

District spokesman John Helmholdt told WOOD Radio they will receive more per student than first forecast, $166 dollars additional per pupil. That won't lead to a revenue gain as the district's population is down 400 students, an essential wash in the neighborhood of $3 million from the state.

Helmholdt said a $5.9 million expense reduction plan went to the trustees and was  the subject of the Public Hearing on the budget. There will be a freeze in administrative compensation, some currently vacant positions will remain unfilled and some non-instructional positions will be cut. A number of departments will be asked to achieve a percentage reduction in their budgets and a $7.5 million allotment will be taken from fund balances to support the system's spending plan.
