Truckers Beware: MSP Motor Carrier Enforcement Inspecting This Week

Posted Tuesday, June 3rd 2014 @ 5am  by Nate Kurth, WOOD Radio Newsroom

Michigan State Police Motor Carrier officers join federal, state and local inspectors from the United States, Canada and Mexico for a vehicle inspection operation.

"Roadcheck 2014" is an annual program designed to ensure highway safety by inspecting commercial vehicles. Officers will focus on cargo securement, brake maintenance, and driver fatigue. The operation begins today and goes through Thursday.

Lt. Steven Horwood of the MSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, told WOOD Radio sleep deprivation is a major issue for commercial drivers. "Drivers' rest, health, and hours of service are the main issue," he says. Because of this, federal regulations limit the number of hours a commercial driver may doperate without a rest period.
