A judge says a mother facing murder and dismemberment charges after her adult son's body parts were found in bags along roads in St. Clair County was his legal guardian because of his severe mental illness.
Macomb County Probate Judge Carl Marlinga told The Associated Press on Monday that the 59-year-old St. Clair Shores woman petitioned the probate court last May for "temporary guardianship on an emergency basis because her son was suicidal and despondent over the illness of his father" who later died.
Marlinga says doctors determined the 32-year-old man had "psychosis and that he was a danger to himself." The judge says the man wanted his mother as guardian.
Her arraignment could come Monday afternoon.
The man's remains were found Thursday about 50 miles northeast of Detroit.
