A western Michigan man who pleaded guilty to a drug crime was sentenced to a year in prison.

He also hit with a $1,000 bill for his share of the cost of having a felony case in the Allegan County courthouse: legal help, lights, phone, building security, even the fitness room used by employees. ``The county fitness center?'' his lawyer asked. ``Correct,'' the court administrator replied. Cunningham's tab now has reached the Michigan Supreme Court, which will hear arguments Thursday to determine whether court costs slapped on convicts should have some reasonable connection to their case.

Critics say criminals, many of them with low income, are being unfairly hit with the cost of government just because they're criminals
