Road Commissions Fret Over Spring Break-up

Road Commissions Fret Over Spring Break-up

Forget Potholes. Road commissions in Michigan worry about some of the hard-surface roads actually breaking up this spring.

The possibility comes from the long stretch of very cold weather we had. In the UP the frost line, that is the depth of frozen ground, is 90 inches, or 7-1/2 feet, below the surface.

And the head of the Delta County Road Commission admits he's not sure what to expect with the ice that deep under the road beds.

And, putting some numbers on the snow plowing, the DOT boss, Kirk Steudle, says the state government already blew $30 million past the top of its $88 million budget.
