Obama talks tough on Ukraine

President Obama said Friday from a NATO summit in Wales the alliance was fully united in its commitments to Ukraine.

"The alliance is fully united in support of Ukraine's sovereignty, independence, its territorial integrity and its right to defend itself," the president said.

His comments came hours after pro-Russian forces in Ukraine reached a cease-fire agreement.  The president said "the only reason" the cease-fire was agreed upon was because of economic pressure on Russia.

The United States and its allies, he said, were moving ahead with further sanctions against Russia.

His statements follow support from U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., who recently returned from a visit to Ukraine. The Michigan senator and chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee said it was "very much" in the interest of the United States to support Ukraine defensively, a sentiment the president endorsed Friday.
