Possibly No More Sweet Anti-Freeze in Michigan

Possibly No More Sweet Anti-Freeze in Michigan

A legislative committee Tuesday will take up a measure prohibiting the sale of anti-freeze in Michigan that does not include an additive that makes it bad to the taste.

Because antifreeze has a sweet flavor, it can be attractive to pets and even children, but can also be deadly.

Under the measure, which would create the "Engine Coolant Bittering Agent Act," a retailer could only sell coolant with the additive, starting January 1st of next year.

The bill does not apply to motor vehicles that are sold which have antifreeze without the bittering agent.

The measure is before the Michigan House Regulatory Reform Committee.
