The new president of the University of Michigan will be Mark Schlissel, who currently is the provost of Brown University.

Schlissel becomes the 14th president of the U of M.

He was selected Friday morning by the U of M Board of Regents.
The 56-year old Schlissel succeeds Mary Sue Coleman, who announced last year that she would be retiring.

Schlissel has been Brown's chief academic officer since July of 2011. He previously was dean of biological sciences in the College of Letters and Science at the University of California-Berkeley.

Schlissel is a graduate of Princeton University. He earned both M.D. and Ph.D. degress at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
