Museum Finds Difficulty in Culling Collection

Posted Monday, May 26th 2014 @ 7am  by The Associated Press

The History Center of Traverse City is looking to rid itself of items in a collection gathered nearly a century ago, but has found it to be a difficult task.

The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports  that the artifacts were obtained and brought to the city by Con Foster during travels through North America. For many years they were on display at a museum bearing his name, but no longer fit with a modern-day museum designed to represent the region's history.

The items range from Aztec and Native American artifacts to petrified wood from Arizona.

Many items have already been returned to tribes, but the Aztec collection is in the basement because it's complicated to repatriate.

The origin of other items is not well-documented.
