ABATE Wants Fewer Unlicensed Riders

A motorcycle lobbying group wants to have fewer unlicensed people riding motorcycles.

You may legally ride without a license in the TIPs, Temporary Instructional Permits, program. But Vince Consiglio at ABATE says 40 percent of people who die in motorcycle wrecks were not licensed.

ABATE is the lobbying group that succeeded in getting Michigan's mandatory helmet law made optional.

Consiglio says the Secretary of State was not keeping track of the number of unlicensed cycle riders, so the proposed new laws would force that and, he says, would result in fewer unlicensed riders in the long run.
