Attempted suicide thwarted in downtown Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids Police said a suicide threat was resolved in downtown Monday without injuries.

Police had much of the downtown area near a parking ramp on Ottawa and Fulton closed off during for about two hours. A person who was not an employee at an area business climbed to the top of the parking structure in a suicide threat.

Police had the suspect in custody at around 1:30 p.m.

"After approx. 45 minutes the subject was taken into protective custody without incident and transported to a local hospital for evaluation," police said in a statement. "No one was hurt during the incident and the effected downtown streets have been opened back up."

Police have not released the name of the person.
