The National Weather Service says winds up to 50 mph over open water on Lake Michigan could whip up waves as tall as 25'.
That's the kind of forecast that brings tourists -- and dare devils -- to the lakeshore.
Ottawa County Sheriff Sgt. Cal Keuning tells WOOD Radio police can't stop you from going onto the ice -- but he'd rather we enjoy the big lake from the shore. No one can predict when or where ice will give way.
"They walk out there, and they don't know how thick the ice is. The water's constantly moving, undercutting the ice. They don't know if it's an inch, two inches, 18 inches. They have no idea. The ice is unstable. I would not walk out there. It is unsafe."
