Elected officials are planning a Presidents' Day observance at the Gerald R. Ford museum in Grand Rapids to honor chief executives who have supported clean air initiatives.

Mayor George Heartwell will be joined at a 10 a.m. news conference by State Rep. Winnie Brinks, City Commissioner Ruth Kelly and Eric Keller of the group Clean Water Action.

They say presidents including Dwight Eisenhower, Ford, George H.W. Bush and Barack Obama have worked to protect public health with clean-air legislation. Obama's Climate Action Plan seeks to curb carbon pollution and promote renewable energy.

Heartwell is an appointee to Obama's Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recognized Grand Rapids as one of the top 20 local governments utilizing green power.
