HIV/Aids Deaths Decrease In Michigan

The number of people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and deaths related to the diseases are down in Michigan.

A report issued by the HIV surveillance unit in the Department of Community Health showed there were 694 new diagnoses of all stages of HIV/AIDS in 2013.

The number is the lowest overall number of new cases reported since 1987, when there were 723 cases of HIV first diagnosed and 318 diagnosed cases of AIDS.

The report also shows there were 55 HIV/AIDS related deaths in 2013, the lowest since 1984 when there were a total of 17 deaths.

There currently are a total of 15,577 in the state with the diseases.
