Volunteers in Eaton County are digging into its education history in an effort to compile a record of the nearly 200 one-room schoolhouses it's had in its 176-year existence.

The Lansing State Journal reports  that the Eaton County Historical Commisson's Jan Sedore and JoeAnn Nehmer, and Genealogy Society's Sherry Copenhaver have spent Thursdays for the past year compiling facts, photos and memories of the schoolhouses. Many of the buildings still stand and some still are in use even though they are no longer schools.

Their findings will be featured in a book to be published by December. Proceeds from the book will help fund grants the commission awards to efforts that preserve county history.
