GR Tries Again on Anti-Begging Law

Posted Tuesday, May 13th 2014 @ 7am

Grand Rapids city commissioners consider a new anti-begging law, after the old one was ruled unConstitutional.

City Attorney Catherine Mish tells WOOD TV the proposed new law is modeled after one in Kentwood, which apparently is acceptable.

Panhandlers would not be allowed within 15 feet of public toilets, ATMs or bus stops. They could not be near you while standing in line to get into a concert.

The ACLU lawyer who sued over the original anti-begging laws says they are watching to see if Grand Rapids actually is making an "end run" around the court.
