Fight Against Asian Carp Suffers Defeat In Court

Posted Wednesday, July 16th 2014 @ 6pm  by Chuck LaTour, WOOD Radio news team

Michigan Congresswoman Candice Miller is sounding off about a decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals in Chicago regarding Asian carp.

The Republican says the appeals court is wrong to uphold a lower court ruling dismissing a multi-state lawsuit to require the Army Corps of Engineers to separate the Mississippi watershed from Lake Michigan to keep out the carp.

Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin filed the lawsuit.

Miller has introduced legislation to require the Chicago River system to be cut off from Lake Michigan, but it has not advanced on Capitol Hill. The Chicago River flows out of Lake Michigan into the Mississippi River basin, and is the only river taking water away from the lake.

Environmental experts warn if the Asian carp make it to Lake Michigan, the Great Lakes commercial fishing industry will be destroyed.
