BP contests ruling on 2010 spill

BP said Thursday it "strongly disagrees" with a court decision stemming from the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana found BP was negligent in the largest offshore oil spill of its kind.

"The law is clear that proving gross negligence is a very high bar that was not met in this case," the company said in a statement.

A string of events led to an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in 2010. The explosion left 11 rig workers dead. Haliburton, a company involved in BP's program, settled for $1.1 billion earlier this week.
