Backup Cameras to be Required in New Cars

It is possible your next new car will have a backup camera as part of its standard equipment. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will require backup cameras in new vehicles by May 2018.

Auto Analyst Mike Wall at IHS Automotive tells WOOD Radio back up cameras are inexpensive for car makers and a potential life saver for car buyers.

"When you get that increased visibility, it can be lifesaver. It can be safer for people but cameras make it easier for drivers parking or backing up. First and foremost, there is a safety factor."

Government figures show nearly 210 backover deaths each year. About a third of those deaths are children, and many are caused by parents.
