Automobile thefts in Michigan were down for the sixth consecutive year.

The Michigan Automobile Theft Prevention Authority reported 24,973 thefts in 2012, down 0.3 percent form 2011 and 65.3 percent from the high of 72,021 in 1986.

Nationally, Michigan ranked seventh in overall vehicle thefts and 14th in thefts per 100,000 people 245.1.

California had the most overall thefts 168,608 and Washington, D.C., had the most per population 579.

Among the top 19 states, Michigan was third for rate of theft reduction since 1986. New York cut the crime by 84.7 percent, to 17,348, and New Jersey cut it by 72.1 percent, to 16,481.

The most stolen vehicle in the state in 2012 was the 2000 Dodge Caravan, followed by the 2005 Chevrolet Impala.

Nationally, the top two were the 1996 Honda Accord and the 1998 Honda Civic.
