The Detroit Tigers needed extra innings to beat the Kansas City Royals yesterday at Comerica Park.  Ian Kinsler hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, and then got the walkoff single in the bottom of the tenth inning as Detroit wins it (2-1).  Starter Max Scherzer scattered four hits while striking out seven over eight innings for a no-decision, while Al Albuquerque got the win.  The series finale comes up this afternoon at 1:08pm as the Tigers send Anibal Sanchez to the mound against Yordano Ventura of the Royals.

The West Michigan Whitecaps open their season tonight in Dayton - First pitch is 7pm, and just a reminder, that the Whitecaps home opener is this Tuesday against Wisconsin at 5/3rd. Ballpark - Game time is 6:35pm.

The Detroit Red Wings came back with two goals in the third period for a (3-2) win over the Boston Bruins last night at the Joe.  Tomas Tatar, Tomas Jurco and Gustav Nyquist all scored for Detroit.  Jimmy Howard made 33 saves in the win.  With 86 points, the Wings remain in the first wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, three points ahead of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Grand Rapids Griffins scored a big (6-1) win over Iowa last night, and Griffins center Mitch Callahan took a puck in the mouth in the first period ripping his lip and losing several teeth.  Grand Rapids will host Hamilton tomorrow night at Van Andel Arena with faceoff time set for 7pm.

The Pistons dropped the first of a two-game road trip to the Indiana Pacers (101-94) last night.  Josh Smith led Detroit with 24 points.

And finally, one of the longest and strangest recruiting soap operas came to a close officially yesterday afternoon for Mark Dantonio and the Michigan State football team.  5-star defensive tackle Malik McDowell of Detroit faxed in his letter of intent late Tuesday night to join MSU's recruiting class of 2014.  With the addition of McDowell, MSU's class is now ranked as #22 in the nation and #2 in the Big Ten behind only Ohio State.
